Defying Odds, Child Survives Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant With Father As The Donor.

Nashik, May 08: On World Thalassemia Day, Samyak Ghoderao, a 10-year-old survivor of Thalassemia Major from Nashik, reunited with Dr Priyatesh Dwivedi, marking a heart-rending moment in his journey of triumph against the disease. Samyak's story is one of resilience and medical breakthroughs, underscored by a successful Haploidentical (half-match) Stem Cell Transplant performed at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC). Diagnosed with Thalassemia Major at the tender age of six months, Samyak's life depended on regular blood transfusions. The absence of a full match donor posed a significant challenge until his family sought help from Dr Dwivedi, renowned for his expertise in Hematology and Stem Cell Transplants.

In November 2022, Dr Dwivedi, with his pioneering approach, opted for the complex yet life-changing Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant, where Samyak's father served as the donor. This decision defied the odds associated with the procedure and marked a historic milestone as the first successful half-match Thalassemia Major Transplant in North Maharashtra.

Observed on May 8th annually, World Thalassemia Day holds significance in raising awareness about Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that affects millions worldwide. The day serves as a platform to educate communities, promote early detection and highlight the importance of comprehensive treatment approaches.

Today, Samyak leads a healthy life, free from the burden of regular blood transfusions. His visit to HCGMCC on World Thalassemia Day was a heartfelt expression of gratitude towards Dr Dwivedi, whose expertise and compassion turned the tide in his battle against Thalassemia Major.
