Hyderabad 06th May 2025: On the occasion of World Asthma Day, Olive Hospital a trusted name in healthcare and dedicated to better health outcomes and saving lives reaffirms its commitment to spreading awareness about Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition that affects millions globally and is often misunderstood or underdiagnosed.

This year’s theme for World Asthma Day is “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All,” underscore the critical need to ensure that individuals with asthma have access to essential inhaled medications.

On this occasion Olive Hospital’s Consultant Pulmonologist and also MBBS MD in Pulmonology Dr. Syed Taha Mahmood said, “Most Asthma cases can be managed with inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators. It is the lack of awareness and access that makes it deadly, otherwise it is easily manageable, so let’s change that starting today by raising awareness, promoting inhaler use and making sure no one is left struggling to breathe.”

Over 262 million people worldwide are suffering from Asthma, which also causes nearly 455,000 deaths every year, according to the World Health Organization. In India, the national burden of asthma is estimated at 17.23 million accounting for 13.09% of the global burden, and 13.2 per thousand death due to asthma in India due to lack of timely diagnosis, poor air quality and limited access to long-term management options.

The prevalence of asthma in India varies with an overall prevalence of 2.05% in adults. Many children go undiagnosed and showcase, and there has been seen prevalence of current wheeze in the 6–7 years, 13–14 years and adults was 3.16%, 3.63% and 3.30%, respectively.  India reports three times higher morality and more than two-time higher disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) than the global proportion of asthma burden.

At Olive Hospital, we believe in empowering people with the right information and tools required to effectively manage and prevent asthma. Asthma is manageable with the right attention and care. Important steps involve adhering to prescribed medication like inhaled corticosteroids on a regular basis to minimize airway inflammation and attacks. Avoiding and identifying common triggers such as dust mites, pollen, mold, smoke, and strong odors is an important part of lowering flare-ups. Keeping homes tidy, employing air purifiers, and ensuring good indoor air quality can help considerably. Working hand-in-hand with a healthcare professional to create a customized Asthma Action Plan will provide timely and proper reactions to symptoms or attacks, which could be life-saving.

Getting regular check-ups is really important for keeping asthma in check and changing up treatments when needed. At Olive Hospital, we also stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle—like staying active, managing stress, not smoking, and getting your flu shot every year to help prevent infections that can make asthma worse. Common asthma signs are wheezing, feeling short of breath, chest tightness, and a cough that just won't quit, particularly at night or in the early morning. Things like pollution, cold air, respiratory infections, and some meds can trigger these symptoms. With the right info and care, asthma doesn’t have to hold you back—and that's what we want to share this World Asthma Day.
