Post-hysterectomy urinary leakage in a young woman. Months of physical and mental suffering. Three fistulas between the bladder and vagina. Complex surgery successfully performed by KIMS Kurnool doctors.

Kurnool, November 3, 2025: A 25-year-old woman from Bethamcherla had to undergo a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) due to fibroids. Because of the fibroids, she suffered from heavy menstrual bleeding, and doctors advised surgery. As she was already married with two children, her family agreed to the procedure.

However, after the hysterectomy, she started experiencing continuous urine leakage. This caused her severe physical and mental distress she couldn’t go out, suffered from foul odor, and gradually lost confidence. After two months of suffering, she approached the Urology Department at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool, where Head of Urology Dr. Y. Manoj Kumar performed a complex surgery that completely cured her condition.

Dr. Manoj Kumar explained “The 25-year-old woman from Bethamcherla, Nandyal district, came to us after developing urine leakage following hysterectomy. We conducted diagnostic tests like CT cystography, which revealed three vesicovaginal fistulas abnormal connections between the urinary bladder and vagina. These fistulas had formed due to complications from her earlier surgery, resulting in constant urine leakage.

Such conditions deeply affect a patient’s social and emotional life. Many lose confidence and isolate themselves from society and family.

This case was particularly complex because one of the fistulas was very close to the urethra. That required meticulous and precise surgical repair. Also, after the first surgery, it is important to wait at least three months for the tissues to heal before attempting a repair. The patient came to us two months after her hysterectomy, so we advised waiting another month before proceeding.

During the surgery, we carefully separated the bladder and vaginal walls, cleaned and repaired the damaged tissues, and reconstructed the area using new tissue layers. We successfully closed all three fistulas with great precision.

After surgery, the patient recovered well. All catheters and tubes were removed, and she was discharged in good condition. She now has no urinary leakage and has regained her confidence. She is much happier and able to lead a normal life again.

Vesicovaginal fistula is a condition that severely affects women’s quality of life not only physically but socially. If diagnosed in time and treated properly, it can be completely cured. Seeing this patient return to normal life gave great satisfaction to our entire team,” said Dr. Y. Manoj Kumar.
