Hyderabad, July 24, 2025: In a remarkable medical achievement, Surgeons at CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, successfully performed a complex Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) surgery on a 29-year-old severely underweight female patient from Nalgonda, marking yet another milestone in high-risk cardiac care under the Telangana Aarogyasri Scheme.

Mrs. Rajitha (Name changed), a 29-year-old woman weighing only 30 kilograms, presented to CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, with complaints of shortness of breath and palpitations. Further medical evaluation revealed that she was suffering from severe mitral valve disease, a condition where the valve between the left heart chambers doesn't close properly. She was also a known case of hypothyroidism.

According to Dr. Sudheer G, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, “Mitral valve disease in young adults is often linked to rheumatic fever during childhood, which may go undiagnosed at the time but causes progressive damage to the heart valves over the years. In this patient’s case, we suspect a rheumatic origin that led to severe mitral valve dysfunction requiring urgent surgical intervention.”

Despite her age, her extremely low body weight put her in the severely underweight category, which significantly increased the risk of surgical intervention. Additionally, during the course of her evaluation, the medical team identified previously undiagnosed partial seizures, further complicating her overall health status. Due to these factors, her STS (Society of Thoracic Surgeons) operative risk was calculated to be over 15%, compared to the typical <2% for patients with normal body composition and health profiles.

Under the expert leadership of Dr. Sudheer G, Senior Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, the cardiac team undertook meticulous pre-operative planning and post-operative care to manage these high-risk complications. The surgery was carried out successfully, and the patient was discharged in a stable condition on the fourth day post-surgery.

Speaking on the procedure, Dr. Sudheer G said, “This was an extremely delicate and high-risk case. The patient’s low weight, existing thyroid condition, and undiagnosed seizures presented multiple clinical challenges. Through multidisciplinary collaboration and precise surgical planning, we were able to perform the procedure safely and successfully. It’s a proud moment for our team and reflects CARE Hospitals’ expertise in handling complex cardiothoracic cases.”

Mr. Praveen, HCOO, CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, commented on the success of the case, “This case is a testament to the clinical excellence and coordinated teamwork at CARE Hospitals. Successfully managing such a high-risk patient with multiple complications reflects our commitment to providing world-class care even in the most challenging circumstances. Every such success story reinforces our belief in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in complex cardiac care.”

This case not only highlights CARE Hospitals’ commitment to patient-centric, high-risk cardiac care but also underscores the capabilities of its medical team in handling complex and rare cases with precision and compassion.
