Chennai, June 22, 2025: CTS Speciality Hospital, a trusted name in orthopedic care in Chennai, has introduced robot-assisted total knee replacement procedures at its Anna Nagar facility, becoming the only hospital in the area to offer this cutting-edge technology known for ensuring surgical precision, minimising risks, and promoting quicker, safer recovery.

The robotic system, developed by the US-based VELYS a leader in orthopedic robotics was officially launched by Mr. M. K. Mohan, MLA of Anna Nagar, in the presence of Dr. Prakash Selvam, Chairman, and Dr. Radhika Venugopal, Managing Director of CTS Speciality Hospital.

CTS Speciality Hospital is a 35-bed facility dedicated to advanced orthopedic care, led by Dr. Prakash Selvam, a seasoned orthopedic surgeon with over 20 years of clinical and surgical experience. Reputed for joint replacement and complex orthopedic procedures, the hospital has a multidisciplinary team of experts in joint replacement, arthroscopy, trauma care, sports injuries, and rehabilitation.

In his comments on the launch of robot-assisted procedure, Dr. Prakash Selvam said, “We are proud to introduce the future of orthopedic care to the people in this region with the launch of the VELYS robotic-assisted solution. While traditional knee replacement surgeries are effective, they often rely heavily on the surgeon’s skill and can vary in outcome. Robot-assisted technology enhances precision by using advanced mapping and real-time data to tailor each procedure to the patient’s unique knee anatomy. This results in more accurate implant placement, reduced tissue damage, minimal blood loss, and faster recovery. Patients benefit from improved joint alignment, greater stability, reduced pain, and better long-term mobility with a shorter hospital stay. Our strengths lie not only in surgical precision, but also in thorough pre-operative planning, personalised recovery programs, and long-term joint health management.”

CTS will not be limiting the robot-assisted surgery only to knee replacements—it will apply the technology to other orthopedic procedures, particularly hip replacements and partial joint reconstructions. “The enhanced precision of robotic systems allows for optimal implant positioning and alignment, which is critical not only in total knee arthroplasty but also in complex hip surgeries, including total hip replacements and revisions. Looking ahead, we are planning to expand robotic applications to include procedures such as unicompartmental (partial) knee replacements, shoulder arthroplasty, and even spine surgeries, based on patient suitability and future technological advancements,” he added.

On the significance of the surgeon’s expertise in robot-assisted surgery, Dr. Prakash Selvam said, “While robot-assisted technology enhances precision and consistency in knee surgeries, human expertise remains absolutely essential for successful outcomes. Robots are valuable tools—they assist with preoperative planning, ensure accurate bone cuts, and help align implants with sub-millimeter accuracy. However, it is the surgeon who makes critical decisions in real time, guided by the patient’s anatomy, joint condition, and overall health. Every patient presents unique challenges that demand clinical judgment, adaptability, and experience—qualities no machine can replicate. From selecting the appropriate implant to managing unexpected intraoperative findings, it is the surgeon’s skill that ensures the technology delivers its full potential.”
