When Alagiri Senthilkumar’s wife, a doctor by profession, was expecting their child the process got complex with her having high blood pressure. Fortunately, the delivery went smooth and both the mother and the child were safe. But this experience taught him a few things.
This process made Alagiri realise the importance of patient care and the impact digitalising health records would do for them. With this idea, he approached his friend Vishnu Vardhana Balu, who agreed to join the business. The duo next approached the American startup accelerator, Y Combinator, and made a place for themselves in their W21 batch.
Thus, BeWell Digital was launched in 2021. The duo are software engineers from PSG College of Technology. Alagiri previously worked with an HR-tech company based in Silicon Valley. Whereas Vishnu was a full-stack architect with IPAOO. The platform makes the patient's health records go digital that can be interpreted by a specialist anywhere. Currently, it is specifically catered toward radiologists.
With this startup, a radiologist can make important and life-saving decisions from anywhere and at any time. It also helps them improve their turnaround times by offering advanced reporting tools. With increased turnaround times, more patients can be catered which increases revenue both for the doctor and the hospital. Another element they provide is the ability to use their platform for research purposes.
In 2021, they had raised an undisclosed amount from angel investors. The startup has so far onboarded 22 hospitals in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In the month of March, they were conducting pilot tests at 15 hospitals for a period of one week. They charge Rs 25 to 40 for a scan and for an annual subscription they charge $1000 to $10,000.
With only 10,000 radiologists practising in India, there lies a severe shortage of radiologists in a country with 1.3 billion people. Radiology is fundamental in diagnosing life-threatening diseases. With this, many diseases can be detected early and can be cured with early intervention.
