New Delhi, 15 September 2025- We are proud to announce that Sightsavers India was recognised and received an award at the 7th Edition of the FICCI Road Safety Awards & Symposium 2025. The award acknowledges the organisation’s work under the RAAHI- National Truckers Eye Health Programme, which continues to safeguard lives on India’s roads by prioritising the eye health of truck drivers and allied transport workers. The event was graced by Hon’ble Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, as the Chief Guest. In his address during the event, he emphasised the importance of eye health among drivers as a critical component of road safety. He noted how regular screenings, cataract referrals and access to spectacles can safeguard drivers’ livelihoods while making highways and roads safer for everyone. Contributing to the national mission of our country; by focusing on preventive eye health, RAAHI directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3.6 and supports the broader ambition of Vision Zero. Truck drivers spend long hours on the road, often in challenging conditions, with little access to healthcare. Poor vision can lead to fatigue, accidents and loss of income. To address this, Sightsavers India launched its RAAHI- National Truckers Eye Health Programme and established Drishti Kendras (Vision Centres), mobile vision centres, outreach camps at key locations, providing free eye screenings, spectacles, referrals and treatment to drivers across the country. Over the years, the initiative has reached over a million truckers, supporting them to continue working safely. The FICCI honour reflects not only Sightsavers India’s commitment but also the power of collaboration with government bodies, industry partners and local health workers. Together, they are strengthening road safety by ensuring drivers can see clearly and drive responsibly RN Mohanty, CEO of Sightsavers India, said, “We are truly honoured to receive this recognition from FICCI, India’s oldest and largest apex industry body. Eye health is an often-overlooked aspect of road safety, yet it has a direct impact on the lives of drivers and everyone who shares the road. Our work through RAAHI has shown what is possible when we collaborate with government, industry and local partners. Such partnerships are vital to scale up services, ensure early detection and provide timely care to drivers across the country.” As India works towards Vision Zero, which is a global road safety strategy that seeks to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries, programmes like RAAHI- National Truckers Eye Health Programme will play a key role. By addressing avoidable blindness in the transport sector, Sightsavers India is ensuring that safer roads become a reality for truckers, passengers and pedestrians alike.
