Chennai, 13 November 2025: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai proudly announces the successful removal of one of the largest fibroid uterus recorded worldwide via robotic hysterectomy. The uterus, weighing an unprecedented 4.95 kilograms and comparable in size to a 36-week pregnancy, was removed by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Robotic Surgeon, utilizing the cutting-edge Da Vinci XI Surgical System.

The patient, Mrs. Ramya, a school teacher residing in Chennai, aged 47, presented symptoms of abdominal bloating and heaviness. Following a detailed evaluation and MRI imaging revealing multiple large uterine fibroids measuring between 12 and 20 centimeters, a decision was made to proceed with robotic-assisted total hysterectomy. The procedure demonstrated exceptional precision and safety despite the complexity posed by the enormous size and vascularity of the uterus.

Dr. Padmapriya Vivek led the surgical team to complete the operation within four hours with minimal blood loss and zero complications. Remarkably, the patient was mobilized the morning following surgery and discharged the very next day. Typical risks associated with such a massive fibroid removal via robotic surgery, including ureteric and bowel injuries or the need to abandon the procedure, were successfully avoided.

“This achievement underscores the unparalleled precision, safety, and efficiency of robotic-assisted surgery, even in the most challenging gynecological cases,” said Dr. Padmapriya Vivek. “With the world’s best robotic system at our disposal, this has set a new gold standard for minimally invasive surgical treatment of large fibroids, enabling faster recovery and superior outcomes for patients.”

Ms Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer & Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, expressed profound pride in the surgical team’s accomplishment, stating, “We are immensely proud of Dr. Padmapriya Vivek and her team for this landmark global milestone. Gleneagles continually strives to deliver world-class medical care and redefine surgical excellence through pioneering advancements.”

This record-setting operation reinforces Gleneagles Hospitals, Chennai, as a center of excellence in robotic surgeries and advanced women’s healthcare within India and globally, added Ms Niranjani

When I came to know that I had a 5 kg fibroid in my uterus, I was frightened and unsure about what would happen next. The doctors explained that robotic surgery would be safer and help in fast recovery, and they were right. I was amazed at how the robotic surgery was performed smoothly and I was able to walk within a day and get back to my normal life much sooner than I expected. I’m truly grateful to the entire team of doctors and staff from Gleneagles Hospital Chennai for giving me my health and confidence back, Said the patient
