Gynaecology emerges as a key specialty driving adoption of robotic surgery in India.

Chennai, 19 March 2026: Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, a part of Fortis Healthcare, has achieved a significant clinical milestone with the completion of 500 robotic assisted gynaecological surgeries in just 28 months- one of the fastest such achievements in India. This milestone underscores the growing adoption of minimally invasive, technology led surgical care in women’s health. The milestone was commemorated at the hospital with a celebratory event including a cake cutting ceremony attended by the clinical team and patients who have benefited from robotic surgery.

This milestone has been led by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai, whose experience spans a wide spectrum of complex and high-risk gynaecological procedures, including hysterectomies, myomectomies, advanced endometriosis excisions, gynaecological oncology surgeries, and management of conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts and pelvic organ prolapse.

A notable highlight within these 500 robotic assisted gynaecological surgery milestones includes a world record recognised 5 kg fibroid hysterectomy, demonstrating the capability of robotic platforms in managing highly complex surgical cases with precision and safety. Women across a wide age range, typically between 25 to 70 years, have benefited from robotic gynaecological procedures, including younger patients requiring fertility preserving interventions and older patients undergoing treatment for cancer related conditions. Robotic assisted procedures are associated with several patient benefits, including reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, lower post-operative pain and shorter hospital stays, enabling faster recovery and earlier return to daily life.

Dr Padmapriya Vivek, Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai, said, “Completing 500 robotic procedures in a relatively short period has provided valuable clinical experience across a wide range of gynaecological conditions. Robotic technology allows us to perform complex procedures with greater precision, better visualisation and improved patient outcomes.

Ms S Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, said, “Robotic surgery has become an important advancement in the treatment of gynaecological conditions, enabling surgeons to operate with enhanced precision through three-dimensional visualisation and improved control of surgical instruments. This is particularly relevant in complex pelvic surgeries where preservation of surrounding tissues and faster recovery are critical.”

Mr. Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer, Fortis Healthcare, said, “This milestone underscores Fortis Healthcare’s commitment to advancing surgical excellence through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies. The success of the robotic gynaecology program at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai reflects our focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centric care and expanding access to minimally invasive surgery across our network. Such achievements reaffirm our vision to drive clinical innovation that enhances outcomes and improves quality of life for patient

, “I underwent robotic surgery for a complex gynaecological condition and experienced significantly lower post-operative pain and minimal blood loss. I was discharged earlier than expected and able to resume normal activities within a short period, which made a meaningful difference to my recovery.” Said a Patient who had undergone the Robotic surgery.

“The procedure involved precise removal of the affected tissue while preserving surrounding structures. The smaller incisions and reduced surgical trauma resulted in a smooth post-operative course, with no major complications and a faster return to daily function, said another patient from Chennai.
