Thane, October 2025: The Urology team at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, has successfully performed a highly intricate nephron-sparing surgery on a 55-year-old woman diagnosed with a complex renal tumor located dangerously close to the kidney’s main blood vessels. The case posed significant surgical challenges due to the tumor’s proximity to the renal hilum — an area densely packed with vital vascular structures.
Given the patient’s age and the need to preserve long-term kidney function, the medical team opted for a nephron-sparing approach instead of a radical nephrectomy. This surgical plan focused on removing the tumor completely while retaining as much healthy kidney tissue as possible — a crucial step in preventing chronic renal impairment.
The procedure required meticulous planning, advanced imaging, and a high level of surgical precision. The team carefully mobilized the kidney, excised the tumor with complete accuracy, and ensured the surrounding blood vessels remained intact. Advanced hemostatic techniques were used to minimize blood loss and protect renal function throughout the operation.
Dr. Sandesh Parab, Consultant Urologist, Andrologist & Renal Transplant Surgeon at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, explained that the biggest challenge in such surgeries is achieving complete tumor removal without compromising kidney preservation. The tumor’s location near the renal vessels demanded exceptional precision, coordination, and surgical control.
Supporting Dr. Parab in this complex procedure were Dr. Aakil Khan and Dr. Ajit Gujela from the Department of Urology, whose expertise contributed significantly to the success of the surgery.
Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with the patient’s renal function remaining well-preserved. Histopathology confirmed negative surgical margins, indicating complete tumor clearance. The patient was discharged in stable condition soon after surgery.
This case highlights the advanced surgical capabilities and collaborative strength of the Urology Department at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, which continues to set benchmarks in minimally invasive and organ-preserving urological care.
