Thane, September 2025: A 29-year-old woman, who had been battling advanced rectal cancer for the past year, has been given a new lease of life after a highly complex surgery at KIMS Hospitals, Thane.
The young patient was diagnosed with locally advanced carcinoma rectum and was on chemotherapy. Multiple hospitals had refused surgery, citing the extent of cancer spread and the risks involved. However, determined to help, Dr. Saneya Pandrowala, Consultant – Surgical Oncology at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, and her team planned and carried out a rare, high-risk operation.
The procedure, known as posterior exenteration with en bloc sacrectomy, involved removing the rectum, uterus, part of the sacral bone (S4/5), and coccyx (tailbone). Along with this, the doctors also reconstructed the vaginal wall using a VY plasty technique, ensuring the patient’s post-surgical quality of life was preserved.
Despite the scale of the surgery, the outcome was highly positive. The histopathology report confirmed that the cancer had responded excellently to treatment, and all surgical margins were clear of disease. Her wounds healed well, and she has now returned to her hometown to continue maintenance therapy.
Reflecting on the case, Dr. Saneya Pandrowala, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said:
“This young woman’s case is a testament to the fact that even advanced cancers can sometimes be treated successfully with the right planning and expertise. Such surgeries are technically challenging, but they can offer hope where none seemed possible. I am grateful to my team for their dedication, and proud that KIMS Hospitals can deliver such advanced cancer care.”
This milestone case underscores KIMS Hospitals, Thane’s ability to perform rare, high-complexity oncological surgeries, offering hope to patients who may otherwise be left without treatment options.
