Patient suffered devastating multi-level hand trauma with fractured bones, severed tendons, muscle damage and vascular injury. Visited 2–3 hospitals and was advised immediate amputation before reaching ShardaCare Healthcity. Advanced reconstructive surgery successfully saved his dominant hand and prevented lifelong disability.

Greater Noida, 8th December 2025: ShardaCare Healthcity, an advanced tertiary care hospital in Greater Noida, successfully saved the right hand of an age-year-old man, from Noida who arrived with a near-non-salvageable complex hand injury following a violent assault involving a sharp weapon. The patient sustained multiple transections, and his right (dominant) hand was severely damaged with exposed bones, severed tendons, and compromised blood flow. Before reaching ShardaCare Healthcity, he had visited 2–3 hospitals, where he was denied admission and advised immediate amputation, as the injury was considered beyond repair.

On arrival at ShardaCare Healthcity’s Emergency Department, it was found that the patient had multiple fractures of the carpal and metacarpal bones — the small bones that form the wrist and the long bones that support the palm and enable hand movement. He also had complete cuts of the flexor pollicis longus tendon, which allows the thumb to bend and grip, along with severe damage to the small muscles and blood vessels of the hand. Immediate evaluation was carried out, and a limb-saving plan was initiated.

The complex reconstruction was led by Dr. Tanmoy Roy, Senior Consultant – Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, and Dr. Nishit Palo, Orthopaedic Surgeon, who together performed meticulous multi-step surgery. All fractured bones were stabilised using K-wires, screws, and implants, while the completely cut tendon, muscles, and vascular structures were repaired using advanced microsurgical techniques. This restored structural stability, tendon continuity, and blood supply—ultimately saving the patient’s hand from amputation and preventing lifelong disability.

Dr. Tanmoy Roy, Senior Consultant – Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, ShardaCare Healthcity, said:

“Assault injuries of this severity often result in lifelong disability, and many centres consider amputation the only option. This patient arrived with multiple fractured bones, completely cut tendons, and significant vascular damage to his dominant hand, making it one of the most complex trauma cases we encounter. The surgery lasted for approximately 5 hours, during which we used advanced micro-surgical re construction multi-layer tendon and bone repair, microvascular repair to meticulously restore bone alignment, reconnect the severed tendon, and repair the damaged muscles and blood vessels. With timely intervention and precise reconstruction, we were able to save his hand and preserve its functional potential. With continued physiotherapy, he is expected to gradually regain movement and strength over the coming months.”

Dr Kousar Shah, Group CEO, ShardaCare Healthcity, said, “This case reflects ShardaCare Healthcity’s commitment to advanced trauma care and limb preservation. Our multidisciplinary teams, supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure, ensure that even the most complex and critical injuries receive the highest level of care.”

The patient is recovering well, can move his fingers, and is undergoing structured physiotherapy. His family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the ShardaCare Healthcity team for saving his hand after multiple hospitals had recommended amputation, describing the outcome as “a second chance at life.”
