A minimally invasive procedure using water vapour (steam) helps to reduce prostate size and offer relief to a patient in Ghaziabad.

Ghaziabad, 13th May 2025: Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, made a landmark achievement by successfully performing REZUM, a minimally invasive water vapour (steam) therapy used to treat prostate enlargement, on a 53-year-old male patient. This marks the first time that the procedure has been conducted in Ghaziabad, representing a significant advancement in urological care. The procedure was performed by Dr. Sanjay Garg, Senior Consultant – Urology and Andrology, and Dr. Ashish Tyagi, Consultant – Urology, along with their team.

The patient had been experiencing poor flow of urine for the past 2 years and had noticed 2-3 episodes of complete urine blockage, during which a pipe had to be used to release the urine. This was due to prostate (a small gland that makes fluid which mixes with sperm to form semen) enlargement, which caused blockage in passing urine. Despite being on medication, the patient experienced side effects and did not see much improvement. Therefore, REZUM, a minimally invasive treatment that uses high-temperature water vapor (steam) to shrink the extra prostate tissue that is causing problems like frequent or difficult urination, was recommended. The whole procedure takes less time and helps men avoid long-term medications or major surgery and preserves sexual (ejaculatory) function.

Dr Sanjay Garg, Senior Consultant - Urology and Andrology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, said, “Prostate issues are a common problem in middle-aged and older men. In India, the prevalence of enlarged prostate is more than 50% in men by the age of 60 years. In this case, the patient had severe difficulty in passing urine, a main cause of prostate enlargement, and hence, this water therapy was recommended. This technology offered a minimally invasive, day-care solution to the patient and significantly reduced recovery time while preserving sexual function and overall quality of his life.”

Dr Ashish Tyagi, Consultant – Urology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, said, “It is one of the latest advancements in the options for treating prostate issues. Performing REZUM at Manipal Hospital Ghaziabad is a proud milestone towards patient-centred, low-risk prostate care. This is a simple yet effective therapy that allows you to return to your normal activities sooner. The therapy was a success, which allowed the patient to comfortably pass urine and has resumed his daily activities with no complications.”
