Mumbai, February 15th, 2025: Every year, over 400,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer, with India alone accounting for more than 60,000 new cases annually. This highlights the need for greater awareness and support. Narayana Health SRCC Childrens Hospital Haji Ali, Mumbai hosted Muskan Ki Mehfil—a heartfelt celebration of courage, hope, and resilience of childhood cancer warriors. The event united the young cancer warriors, donors, families, and hospital staff for a day filled with talent show contests, music, dance, drawing, fancy dress, and fun moments. The Young cancer warriors showcased their talents in all these activities. Later, speakers gave motivational talks to the audience. And the Chief Guest presented the winners with prizes and those who participated in national-level events were also felicitated.
Dr. Purna Kurkure, Senior Consultant and HOD- Paediatric Haemato-Oncology and BMT praised the young cancer warriors for their incredible courage and determination. She said, "Their journey is not just about battling illness but redefining strength and hope beyond therapy to be in the mainstream of society. This event is truly inspiring and a testament to the resilience and unwavering dedication of doctors and caregivers. We must raise awareness about childhood cancer, ensuring early detection and support for every child in need. I appreciate all for their efforts to bring cheer to these children and their families and I laud each and every child for their war against cancer. "
Dr. Kriti Hedge, Consultant Paediatric Haemato-Oncology, Narayana Health SRCC Children’s Hospital, emphasized the need to break the stigma around childhood cancer: "Cancer is often seen as a dreadful diagnosis, and many families hesitate to talk about it. But today, decades of research and breakthroughs have made childhood cancer highly curable—80% of our young warriors successfully defeat it. International Childhood Cancer Day honours these brave children and their families who inspire us every day.”
She added, ’However, increased awareness is needed to ensure timely treatment at specialized centres that can manage complexities and improve survival rates. Children are resilient and they deserve a future beyond survival—one where they thrive. Through initiatives like our ACT (After Completion of Treatment) clinic and partnerships with Survivor Support Groups like Ugam of Indian Cancer Society, we aim to empower survivors to live full, impactful lives. Our goal is not just to treat cancer but to provide compassionate, holistic care that focuses on life beyond treatment."
