PCOS Is Not a Life Sentence—It's Manageable

▴ Dr Shachi Joshi, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
If your menstrual cycles stay irregular—missing more than three periods in a row or having fewer than nine cycles a year—it's time for a professional evaluation. These patterns might indicate underlying hormonal imbalance or ovulatory issues.

PCOS is common across the reproductive years, with a range of symptoms and long-term health implications if left misaddressed. However, early detection, combined with lifestyle adjustments, medical support, and consistent follow-up, dramatically improves outcomes.

It’s a journey of balance, not perfection. Thoughtful care—tailored to your goals and concerns—can help restore hormonal balance, regulate cycles, support emotional wellness, and preserve fertility. With knowledge, self-advocacy, and the right medical partnership, PCOS becomes manageable, not overwhelming.

When to Talk to a Gynaecologist or Healthcare Provider

If your menstrual cycles stay irregular—missing more than three periods in a row or having fewer than nine cycles a year—it's time for a professional evaluation. These patterns might indicate underlying hormonal imbalance or ovulatory issues.

If you experience signs of excessive androgens, such as acne, facial or body hair (hirsutism), or thinning hair, these may point to elevated “male” hormone levels requiring assessment.

If you're struggling with fertility or trying to conceive, early diagnosis can be impactful. Interventions like ovulation-inducing medications (e.g., letrozole) significantly improve outcomes.

If you notice metabolic or cardiovascular warning signs such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure, or dyslipidemia, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

In that case, PCOS raises your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and related issues, even if you’re not overweight.

If you're experiencing mood disturbances, including anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, it's vital to address these, as PCOS can significantly impact psychological health.

If symptoms like fatigue, sleep disturbances, or signs of obstructive sleep apnea occur, this may be connected to PCOS and needs evaluation.

Home Strategies for Managing PCOS

Adopt a Balanced, Whole-Food Diet

Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables and legumes. These foods help maintain steady blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and promote hormonal balance.

Exercise Consistently

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (e.g., brisk walking, cycling, or yoga). Engaging in regular activity helps reduce insulin resistance and regulate menstrual cycles, which are central to PCOS management.

Manage Weight Thoughtfully (if needed)

Even a modest weight reduction—5–10%—can meaningfully improve metabolic health and fertility.

Support Emotional Well-Being

Seek support or counselling if you're experiencing mood issues. Connecting with peer groups, practising stress relief techniques, and advocating for yourself can all help.

Track Your Cycle and Symptoms

Keep a simple log of your periods, symptoms, diet, and mood. This information helps both you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions.
