Chennai, 12 May 2025: Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman of Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, received the Film Festival award for his pioneering work on Pinhole eye surgery (Pupilloplasty) from Dr. Jason Jones, Chief Judge at ASCRS in Los Angeles, USA.

Prof. Dr. Amar introduced Pinhole Pupilloplasty, a technique that reduces the size of the iris and creates a pinhole pupil, helping patients avert corneal transplantation. This procedure is beneficial for individuals with corneal scars, opacities, or conditions like Conical Cornea. In contrast to traditional corneal transplants which require donor tissues, sutures and risks of rejection, Pinhole Pupilloplasty offers quick recovery. Furthermore, the patient gets the advantage to see distance and near objects without glasses.

In his comments, Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman of Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital said, “Receiving the prestigious Film Festival award at ASCRS is an honor. It is truly humbling to get recognised among renowned professors of Ophthalmology across the world. Pinhole Pupilloplasty technique has changed the lives of countless patients and seeing the growing adoption of this procedure across the world by ophthalmologists is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that this technique is helping people regain sight and confidence, drives me to do what I love – to research, innovate and impact lives with the gift of sight.”

Today, Pinhole Pupilloplasty is widely performed by ophthalmologists across the world due to its ease of surgery and patient comfort. This technique pioneered by Prof Dr Amar continues to revolutionize ophthalmic care.
