Varicose veins are a progressive vascular condition that can severely impact mobility and quality of life. Symptoms are swollen twisted veins typically seen in the legs and feet, that are caused by weakened valves which disrupt blood flow. Varicose veins can lead to serious complications such as persistent leg pain, heaviness, swelling, itching, skin discoloration, non-healing ulcers, risk of blood clots and chronic venous disease.

Epidemiological studies reveal a variable incidence rate of 20–40%. Though half of the adult population show signs of vein-related changes, at least half of those have visible varicose veins. The last comprehensive study in 1972 estimated a 25% national prevalence. More recent research, including a 2021 study among police personnel, noted that 14.7% had significant varicose veins, with 20% at risk for ulcer development.

Several groups are vulnerable to developing varicose veins due to physiological and lifestyle factors. These include women especially during pregnancy and menopause, older adults, individuals with a family history of vein disorders, and professionals who spend prolonged hours standing or sitting, such as teachers, surgeons, traffic police, factory workers and security guards. Additionally, obesity and sedentary habits further increase vein pressure and risk.

The one-day clinic will offer free Venous Doppler Screening to assess vein health, along with expert consultations with vascular surgeons. Attendees will receive personalized guidance on lifestyle modifications and treatment options. The Hospital is also offering a 20% discount on any recommended further investigations.
