Bengaluru, January 16th , 2025: In a remarkable demonstration of how advanced medical technology is transforming surgical care for the elderly, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, has successfully performed a robotic repair of a complex recurrent left inguinal hernia in a 93-year-old patient.

The case was particularly challenging due to the patient’s age and medical history. He had undergone multiple hernia surgeries in the past, including a bilateral open inguinal hernia repair nearly 35 years ago and another open mesh repair for recurrence 15 years later. Over time, the hernia recurred again, accompanied by extensive scarring, previously placed mesh, and distorted anatomy, making conventional surgery high risk.

After detailed evaluation, the surgical team decided to proceed with a Robotic Transabdominal Preperitoneal (rTAPP) repair, a minimally invasive approach that offers greater precision. The robotic system provided three-dimensional visualisation, enhanced dexterity, and improved control, enabling surgeons to safely navigate through scarred tissue and complex anatomical structures.

Despite the complexity of the case, the procedure was completed smoothly with excellent haemostasis. Owing to the minimally invasive nature of robotic surgery, the patient experienced minimal post-operative pain and was discharged on the first day after surgery, highlighting its potential benefits even for very elderly patients.

Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Ramraj V. N., Senior Consultant – Gastrointestinal, General, Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery at Aster CMI Hospital, said that recurrent hernias in elderly patients with prior mesh repairs are among the most technically demanding cases. “Robotic surgery allowed us to perform meticulous dissection with superior visualisation and control, ensuring a safe and effective repair. This approach reduces pain, shortens recovery time, and expands surgical options for patients who were earlier considered high risk,” he said.

Dr. Prashant N, CEO – Aster Hospitals, said the case reflects the hospital’s commitment to innovation and clinical excellence. “Successfully performing a complex robotic hernia repair in a 93-year-old patient demonstrates how advanced technology, combined with skilled clinicians, can significantly improve outcomes even in high-risk cases. Robotic surgery is transforming the way we manage complex conditions, offering safer procedures, faster recovery, and better quality of life for patients,” he said.

The successful surgery underscores the growing role of robotic-assisted procedures in managing complex surgical conditions and reinforces Aster CMI Hospital’s position as a leading centre for advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical care.
