A 23-year-old medical intern was admitted in critical condition after a high-speed road traffic accident with severe chest injuries, internal bleeding, liver injury, and heart-related complications.

Chennai, 27 April 2026: SRM Global Hospitals successfully saved the life of a 23-year-old male medical intern who was brought to the hospital in a critical condition after a high-velocity road traffic accident. When he arrived at the Emergency Room, he had severe breathing difficulty, chest injuries, internal bleeding, and was in shock. He was immediately received by Dr. Rajakali and the Emergency Medicine team, who started emergency treatment and stabilized him.

Doctors found that he had serious injuries on both sides of his chest, collapsed lungs, blood collected inside the chest, air leakage around the lungs, liver injury, severe blood loss, and also signs of blunt cardiac injury, which means the heart was affected due to the strong impact of the accident. Even after blood transfusions and emergency care, his condition became worse. The Trauma Surgery team decided to perform Damage Control Surgery (DCS), a special life-saving surgery done in critically injured patients where the main goal is to quickly stop bleeding and stabilize the patient before doing major surgery later.

The surgery was led by Dr. P. Vijayan, Senior Consultant – Trauma & Acute Care Surgery, along with Dr. Abdul Hakeem and Dr. Vishnu Teja Muddu, Consultants – Trauma & Acute Care Surgery. They performed emergency abdominal packing to control internal bleeding. Trauma residents Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. Arya were also actively involved in patient care. After surgery, the patient was shifted to the Critical Care Unit led by Dr. Arthi Rajendran and team, where he was closely monitored with ventilator support, heart monitoring, correction of blood clotting problems, and other intensive care treatment. After 48 hours, once his condition improved, doctors performed a second planned surgery to remove the abdominal packs and safely close the abdomen. The patient recovered well over the next two weeks. He was successfully taken off the ventilator, became hemodynamically stable, and is now being planned for discharge.

The patient was managed by a multidisciplinary team including Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Critical Care, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, and Nursing staff.

Speaking about the case, Dr. P. Vijayan said, “This was a very serious trauma case with severe blood loss and heart injury. In such situations, quick decision-making is very important. Damage Control Surgery helped us first save the patient’s life, and the planned second surgery helped complete his recovery.”

This successful recovery highlights the importance of advanced trauma care, quick emergency response, and teamwork in saving lives after major accidents at SRM Global Hospitals.
