Surgeons at CARE Hospitals, Malakpet Save 72-Year-Old Woman Through High-Risk Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery

▴ CARE Hospitals Performs Lifesaving High-Risk Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery on 72-Year-Old Woman
Despite gallbladder perforation and multiple comorbidities, advanced laparoscopic expertise at CARE Hospitals ensures rapid, complication-free recovery.
Hyderabad 24th November, 2025: CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, successfully performed a lifesaving, high-risk laparoscopic gallbladder surgery on a 72-year-old woman from Nalgonda, who arrived in a critical condition with severe right upper abdominal pain and hypotension.

She had initially been treated at another hospital, where she was diagnosed with acute calculous cholecystitis complicated by gallbladder perforation and started on antibiotics and inotropic support. Her condition was further complicated by multiple comorbidities including Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), a previous Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), diabetes, hypertension and ongoing antiplatelet therapy, placing her at extremely high risk for bleeding and surgical complications. Due to her deteriorating state, she was shifted to CARE Hospitals for advanced treatment.

A team led by Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Sr. Consultant & Head Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology & Robotic Surgery, performed laparoscopic adhesiolysis, cholecystectomy and a thorough peritoneal wash. The surgery revealed dense adhesions, pus in the supracolic compartment, gangrenous gallbladder changes and a completely frozen Calot’s triangle. Despite the complexity, early surgical intervention prevented severe sepsis and further organ complications. The patient began mobilizing within 24 hours and had a smooth postoperative recovery. Such cases are rarely managed laparoscopically in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities, making this a notable achievement.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said, “This was one of the most challenging cases because the patient came to us in a highly unstable condition with a perforated gallbladder and multiple major health issues. Performing a laparoscopic procedure in such a scenario demands utmost precision, careful dissection and quick decision-making. What made the difference here was our ability to intervene early, use minimally invasive techniques and coordinate closely with our critical care and anaesthesia teams. For elderly and high-risk patients, laparoscopic surgery not only reduces complications but also helps them recover faster, with less pain and a shorter hospital stay.”

Mr. Praveen Kumar Edla, Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Malakpet said, “This successful outcome highlights the strength of our integrated clinical system at CARE Hospitals. Treating a patient with so many comorbidities requires seamless teamwork, from the emergency response and diagnostics to surgical expertise and postoperative critical care. Our focus is always on delivering timely, safe and advanced care, especially in high-risk situations where every minute counts. Cases like this truly reflect our commitment to saving lives through clinical excellence and coordinated patient-centric care.”

CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, is one of the few centres equipped to perform such high-risk gastrointestinal surgeries laparoscopically, supported by advanced technology and multidisciplinary care. The patient is currently stable and recovering well. Doctors emphasised that severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially in elderly individuals, should not be ignored, as timely evaluation can prevent life-threatening complications like perforation and sepsis.
