Bengaluru, 23 January 2026: Hospitals across Bengaluru including Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road are witnessing a noticeable rise in viral respiratory infections over the past few weeks, with patients presenting with cold, cough, fever, muscle pain, and feeling of discomfort. Doctors have observed a steady increase in outpatient and emergency visits related to viral respiratory illnesses, across age groups.
While viral respiratory infections are typically seasonal, doctors at Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road note that the number of cases this year is higher compared to the same period last year, with many patients experiencing longer-lasting symptoms, especially children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Dr. G Nasiruddin, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road Bengaluru said, “Over the past few weeks, we are seeing an average of 5–10 cases of viral respiratory infections daily at Fortis Cunningham Road. Compared to last year, the number of cases this season is noticeably higher, with many patients experiencing symptoms for a longer duration. While most viral infections are self-limiting, delayed medical care, self-medication, and ignoring early warning signs can lead to complications such as pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, and worsening of chronic lung or heart disease. People should seek medical advice early, especially if symptoms persist beyond a few days, rather than relying on home remedies or unnecessary antibiotics.”
Why viral respiratory infections are rising:
  • Sudden changes in weather that stress the immune system
  • Increased indoor crowding with poor ventilation
  • Low immunity due to poor nutrition, stress or lack of sleep
  • Exposure to infected individuals in homes, schools and workplaces
  • Pre-existing conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes or heart disease
  • Incomplete recovery from previous viral illness
Common signs and symptoms:
  • Fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, headache, and loss of appetite
  • Sore throat with runny or blocked nose
  • Persistent cough, with or without phlegm
  • Breathlessness, wheezing or chest tightness
  • In severe cases, fast breathing, confusion, or bluish discoloration of lips
Precautions to reduce risk and spread:
  • Maintain good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette, including covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid close contact with unwell individuals and wear a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces during outbreaks
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in homes and workplaces
  • Stay hydrated, eat balanced meals, get enough rest and avoid smoking or polluted air
  • Avoid self-medication with antibiotics; high-risk individuals should seek early medical advice at the first sign of symptoms
When to seek urgent medical care:
  • Persistent high fever
  • Increasing breathlessness, chest pain or worsening cough or wheezing despite treatment
  • Sudden weakness, confusion or bluish discoloration of lips or fingers
Rising viral respiratory infections are a reminder that small precautions can make a big difference. Early recognition of symptoms, responsible care and timely medical advice and simple preventive measures can significantly reduce the complications and help prevent the spread of viral respiratory infections in the community. Most viral respiratory infections can be effectively managed with early consultation and supportive care, without the need for hospitalization.
