Hyderabad, 13th August, 2025: Today is World Organ Donation Day, observed across the globe every year to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and to inspire citizens to pledge to donate organs after death. This day is a reminder that each of us can save lives even after we are gone.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 130,000 solid organ transplants are performed each year, but this meets only about 10% of the worldwide need. Countries with higher awareness and streamlined donor systems have achieved significantly better outcomes, showing what is possible when organ donation becomes a social norm.

An organ donor can be anyone whose healthy organs are transplanted to a patient in urgent need. These organs, donated after brain death or cardiac death, can be preserved and transplanted to save multiple lives. Such donations not only restore health but also give recipients a second chance to live a normal and fulfilling life.

“Every year, over 1.8 lakh Indians develop end-stage kidney disease, yet only about 12,000 kidney transplants take place across the country. Even a small increase in organ donation rates could help thousands of patients get a second chance at life. By pledging to donate organs, each of us can make a profound difference and bring hope to patients who are waiting for a life-saving transplant,” said Dr. Sushanth Kulkarni, Senior Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic & Renal Transplant Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, Hitec-city, Hyderabad.

The need is equally urgent for patients with heart and lung failure. Dr. Pramod Reddy Kandakure, Clinical Director Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, Hitec-city, Hyderabad added, “Many patients with advanced heart or lung disease are left with no treatment options except a transplant. Without timely donor organs, they often lose their battle for life. Increasing awareness and early pledging for organ donation is the only way to ensure these patients get a fair chance at survival. DIL DHADAKNE DO - Let your loved ones’ heart continue to beat.”

Liver failure is another major challenge. Dr. Karunakar Reddy, Senior Consultant - Surgical Gastroenterology at CARE Hospitals, Hitec-city, Hyderabad said, “In India, around 2 lakh people die each year due to liver failure or liver cancer. At least 25,000–30,000 of these lives could be saved with a liver transplant. Unfortunately, the number of liver transplants performed annually is only around 2,000, mainly due to shortage of donor organs. If more citizens pledged to donate, we could save thousands of lives every year.”

Telangana has been a leading state in promoting organ donation through initiatives like Jeevandan, which has set an example for other states to follow. The success of such programmes shows that coordinated efforts between hospitals, government bodies, and NGOs can significantly improve organ donation rates.

Lack of awareness, cultural myths, and hesitation to discuss organ donation within families remain the biggest obstacles. But with modern transplantation techniques and effective medicines, recipients can live long and healthy lives. A single donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance many more through tissue donation such as corneas and skin.

World Organ Donation Day is a powerful reminder that each of us holds the potential to be a life-saver. CARE Hospitals urges every citizen to take the pledge, talk to their loved ones about their wishes, and help turn organ donation into a movement that can change the future of healthcare in India.
