Mumbai, March 2026:
A 25-year-old man who had recently begun dialysis due to advanced kidney failure received a life-saving kidney transplant from his 48-year-old mother at Wockhardt Hospitals, offering him a chance to return to a normal and active life. The successful living donor kidney transplant was performed under the care of Dr Nikhil Bhasin after a rapid but comprehensive transplant evaluation.
The young patient had been diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and was started on dialysis just two months earlier when his kidneys could no longer perform their normal function. Further investigations suggested that the underlying cause was likely a form of glomerular disease, a condition that damages the kidney’s filtering units known as glomeruli. Despite a trial of steroid therapy, his kidney function continued to deteriorate, eventually requiring dialysis.
“Developing kidney failure at such a young age can be extremely challenging, both physically and emotionally,” said Dr Nikhil Bhasin at Wockhardt Hospitals. “For younger patients, transplantation offers a far better quality of life compared with long-term dialysis, allowing them to resume education, work, and normal daily activities.”
Given the patient’s young age and strong motivation to undergo transplantation, doctors advised early evaluation for a transplant rather than continuing dialysis for an extended period. The patient’s mother stepped forward as a donor and underwent detailed compatibility testing, including blood investigations and transplant fitness evaluation, to ensure the procedure would be safe for both donor and recipient.
With coordinated efforts from the transplant team, the complete transplant workup — including donor evaluation, medical clearances, and regulatory approvals — was completed within a month.
“The advantage of a living donor kidney transplant is that it allows us to plan the surgery in a timely manner, which significantly improves outcomes,” explained Dr Nikhil Bhasin. “When transplantation is performed early, patients can avoid prolonged dependence on dialysis and return to a healthier, more independent life.”
The transplant surgery was successfully performed, and the donated kidney began functioning well soon after the procedure. Both the mother and son recovered steadily and are currently doing well.
Doctors emphasise that kidney transplantation remains the most effective long-term treatment for end-stage kidney disease, particularly in younger patients. Early diagnosis, timely referral to transplant specialists, and the presence of a willing living donor can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.
This case highlights how early decision-making, family support, and advanced transplant care can transform the outlook for young patients facing kidney failure, giving them the opportunity to lead a healthier and more productive life.
Living donor kidney transplant restores normal life for young patient within weeks of starting dialysis.
