Chennai, January 30, 2026: In a remarkable life-saving effort, Iswarya Hospital, OMR, Chennai Saved Extremely Premature Twin Female babies born at just 27 weeks of gestation battling multiple life-threatening co-morbidities and low birth weight of 1.1kg each in her hometown. The twins by birth had a severe respiratory distress, unstable vital parameters, Low Immunity and Jaundice due to extreme premature birth. Doctors team spearheaded by Dr Ravi S, Senior Consultant Neonatologist, Iswarya Hospital, Chennai transported the twin babies from Pondicherry to Iswarya Hospital, OMR, Chennai in a critical condition through specially equipped NICU ambulance with mechanical ventilation support, ensuring uninterrupted life support to the twin babies during transit.

A 25-year-old woman from Pondicherry had a sudden severe preterm labor pain, the family consulted the Dr Ravi S, Senior Consultant Neonatologist, Iswarya Hospital, Chennai for the emergency treatment. The doctors team decided to transport the mother to Chennai through a NICU ambulance, but due to critical health condition, the patient was admitted to local hospital in Pondicherry, and she delivered extreme premature twins through an emergency LSCS (Lower Segment Caesarean Section) at private hospital in Pondicherry.

Doctors at Iswarya hospital transported the extremely premature twin babies to Chennai for a lifesaving treatment in September 2025. On arrival, the babies were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Iswarya Hospital Chennai. The multidisciplinary neonatal team initiated advanced mechanical ventilatory care, surfactant therapy for lung maturity and umblical lines were secured and total parenteral nutrition started immediately. Both babies had symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus and recurrent apneic episodes which were managed efficiently. The infection control measures, and nutritional support provided at hospitals helped the babies gradually stabilise and gain weight.

Despite the high risk associated with extreme prematurity, the twins responded positively to treatment. They slowly weaned off ventilator support, and with nutrition support twins achieved the weight gain of 1.520kg and 1.530kg respectively.  On 38th day of their life babies were roomed with their mother and on 42nd day of life the babies were on full oral feed with fortification and supplements. The twins got discharged from hospital after 65 days of hospitalization. Currently the twin babies are healthy with no major complications

Speaking about the case, Dr. S Ravi, Consultant Neonatologist, Iswarya Hospital, Chennai, said, “Extremely premature babies born at 27 weeks are among the most fragile newborns. Timely transfer in a ventilated NICU ambulance, immediate intensive care and continuous monitoring was critical in saving these twins. This successful outcome reflects the strength of our neonatal care infrastructure and our dedicated team.”

At Iswarya Hospital, we continuously invest in advanced NICU facilities and specialist teams to handle the most complex neonatal emergencies. The successful stabilization and recovery of these extremely premature twins underscore our vision to set new benchmarks in neonatal and maternal care across the regionSaid Dr S Rajasundaram, CEO, Iswarya Hospital, OMR, Chennai
