The Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has released a scheme ‘Strengthening of Pharmaceutical Industry (SPI) under which they will disperse Rs 500 crore by FY 2025-26.

This plan will help all pharma clusters SMEs and MSMEs spread across the country in improving its quality, productivity and sustainability. The scheme also plans to upgrade the existing pharmaceutical facilities. The goal of the scheme is to make India the global leader in the sector of the pharmaceutical segment. For this, they would have to work towards making all small and big facilities work as per the national and international standards.

There are 3 main components of the scheme -

Assistance to the Pharmaceutical industry for common facilities (APICF) Pharmaceutical technology up-gradation assistance scheme (PTUAS) Pharmaceutical & Medical devices promotion and development scheme (PMPDS)

For the APICF, the government has allocated Rs 178 crore for the 5 years. For PTUAS the government will spend Rs 300 crores for the same duration. Whereas for PMPDS, the spending will be Rs 21.5 crores for the next five years.

Our pharmaceutical industry is the 3rd largest by volume and 14th largest in terms of value globally. Its total annual turnover was Rs. 2,89,998 crore in the year 2019-2020. It also contributes 6.6% to the total merchandise exports.
