Chennai, 7th October 2025: In a breakthrough in minimally invasive neurosurgery, Doctors at Iswarya Hospital, OMR, Chennai successfully removed a 4.5 cm brain tumor from a 58-year-old woman through a tiny opening made within the natural crease of her eyebrow. A team of expert neurosurgeons headed by Dr. Pradeep Balaji, and Dr. Agnetia Vinoth, Senior Consultant-Neurosurgeons performed the trans-brow supraorbital keyhole approach, a minimally invasive brain surgery and removed the tumour in the frontal lobe of the brain. The surgery lasted for over four hours.
The patient who is a cancer survivor from Chennai had multiple comorbidities visited Iswarya hospital in the second week of august 2025 with severe headache, vomiting and giddiness. On arrival, doctors examined the patient's condition; an MRI & CT scan revealed that the patient had a tumour in the left frontal region of the brain which had spread from another part of the body and there was excess bleeding inside the tumor. Doctors briefed the patient’s family on the risks and complications of the surgery.
Despite the patient's age and medical history, surgeons used cutting-edge neurosurgery instruments like intra-operative neuro-monitoring, neuronavigation systems, and operating microscopes to ensure accuracy, reduce risk, and preserve vital brain functions. The keyhole surgery technique avoided the large incisions and allowed surgeons to reach deep brain tumors with the least disturbance to normal brain tissue. Post the surgery, the patient recovered quickly and was able to leave the ICU earlier than usual and mobilized independently within three days.
“Traditionally, such cases require wide craniotomies, which mean longer recovery and more wound-related issues , but with this supraorbital keyhole approach, we could remove the tumor safely without a need for head shaving, large skin incision, large opening in the skull, reducing post-operative discomfort and visible scars, said Dr. Pradeep Balaji, Senior Consultant Brain & Spine Surgeon, Iswarya Hospital
“The real benefit lies in patient recovery. Even with significant comorbidities, the patient was able to resume normal activities much faster. The cosmetic advantage is only a bonus, not the primary aim.” Said Dr. Agnetia Vinoth, Consultant, Neurosurgeon, Iswarya Hospital
Dr. S. Rajasundaram, Director of Oncology and CEO of Iswarya Hospital, congratulated the surgical and nursing teams: “This case highlights our commitment to offering world-class neurosurgical care right here in Chennai, combining modern technology with compassionate expertise.”
Neurosurgeons removed the brain tumour by making a small incision over the eyebrow using Neuro-monitoring, neuronavigation systems and a high-end microscope.
