The World Health Organization highlights the critical impact of hypertension on mortality and disability in India. The 2019–2020 National Family Health Survey reported a prevalence of 24% in men and 21% in women, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and management.

March 2024 – Bengaluru, Karnataka, India - In 2023, India’s foremost naturopathy hospital, Jindal Naturecure Institute, observed concerning patterns in the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension among its patients. Following the global shift toward sedentary lifestyles post-COVID, the institute noted a significant rise in individuals affected by lifestyle-related ailments.

The data from Jindal Naturecure Institute reveals a significant rise in patients suffering from hypertension when compared to the calendar year 2022 to 2023. In the January-December 2022 period, the institute received 3,165 patients suffering from hypertension, while the number increased to 3928 from January-December 2023, marking a substantial surge of approximately 24.1%. This increase was observed consistently across both male and female patients.

Also, in the past year, Jindal Naturecure Institute had treated a total of 4,111 diabetes patients, with 2,465 being males and 1,646 females. The age range spanned from a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 79 years.

Dr Babina NM, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Jindal Naturecure Institute, said, "The data underscores the urgency of addressing lifestyle issues. Everyone has witnessed the impact of leading a healthy lifestyle on our well-being during COVID. We actively advocate for preventive measures, patient education, and the overall well-being of each individual through Naturopathy treatment. Going above and beyond mere medical intervention, the institute is committed to fostering a culture of proactive health management, ensuring that patients receive effective treatment and acquire the knowledge and tools necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives."

Furthermore, a staggering 11.4% of India's population, equivalent to 101 million people, are living with diabetes, and an additional 136 million people are pre-diabetic. Alarming research from the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and Indian Council of Medical Research suggests that nearly half of these pre-diabetics may transition to diabetes within five years. Over the period from 2019 to 2021, 31 million Indians developed diabetes, according to a comprehensive study covering all states of India. The burden of diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, and obesity has surged in the last four years, contributing to the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

"With a commitment to root-cause resolution, naturopathy promotes healthy behaviours through counselling and education, facilitating impactful behavioural change at an individual level. Prevention is the need of the hour, especially with the rising incidences of non-communicable diseases in India, and Jindal Naturecure Institute stands as a beacon for proactive health management", further adds the CMO at Jindal Naturecure Institute.

"Hypertension cases were predominantly observed among individuals aged 30-80 years, with males accounting for 47.7% and females for 52.3% of the cases, according to our data. Unfortunately, hypertension control programs in India often receive inadequate attention, funding, and prioritization. Strengthening these programs should be an integral part of India's journey towards achieving universal health coverage. Embracing a healthy lifestyle is paramount to mitigating the risks of hypertension and diabetes. This includes incorporating regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and minimizing salt and sugar intake. Quitting alcohol, managing stress effectively, and prioritizing regular health check-ups are also essential for early detection and management of these conditions. By adopting these strategies, individuals can safeguard their health and pave the way for a happier and healthier future” said Dr Babina.

In its unwavering commitment to holistic healthcare, Jindal Naturecure Institute stands at the forefront of actively enhancing community well-being. Prioritizing preventive measures, patient education, and overall health through natural therapies, the institute exemplifies a mission of empowering individuals for healthier lives. It remains resolute in its pursuit of addressing the escalating health challenges in the country, fostering a culture of proactive health management and well-rounded well-being.
