India, 11 February 2026 : Karma Foundation, a Pune-based charitable trust providing veterinary care for animals in need, is steadily contributing to the advancement of animal welfare in India through structured medical care, rescue initiatives, and preventive healthcare programmes for stray and community animals. Founded in January 2018, the organisation was established with the objective of providing ethical, accessible, and advanced veterinary treatment to animals that would otherwise be left without care.
At the heart of Karma Foundation’s work is its 14,000 sq. ft. animal healthcare facility in Pune, designed to operate on the lines of a human hospital. The centre is equipped with an in-house pathology laboratory, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), operation theatre, recovery wards, and an outpatient department. With the capacity to offer inpatient care to up to 150 animals and outpatient services to approximately 300 animals per month, the facility enables timely and comprehensive medical intervention for animals in critical condition.
Karma Foundation’s services span emergency trauma care, diagnostics, Trauma and emergency surgeries, Orthopedic Surgery, Oncological Surgery, Neurological Surgery and more, sterilisation, vaccinations, and post-treatment rehabilitation. In addition to life-saving treatment, the organisation places strong emphasis on preventive healthcare, particularly vaccination and sterilisation, to address long-term challenges such as disease control and animal population management.
Since its inception, Karma Foundation has recorded significant on-ground impact, with over 21,000 animals saved, more than 24,000 sterilisations conducted, over 46,000 vaccinations administered, and upwards of 12,000 surgeries performed. Thousands of animals have also received treatment through its community clinic initiatives.
Beyond numbers, the foundation’s impact is reflected in its recovery outcomes. Animals brought in with severe trauma, critical infections, and life-threatening injuries have been able to survive and recover due to timely medical intervention, specialised surgeries, and sustained post-operative care. Many animals that arrived unable to walk, eat, or survive independently have gone on to regain mobility, health, and a chance at a dignified life. These recoveries underline the importance of structured veterinary healthcare systems in addressing what is often an invisible crisis on India’s streets.
Commenting on the journey, Ms. Priya Kailad, Founder and President, Karma Foundation, said, “Animal welfare is not just about rescue, it is about responsibility and continuity. We started Karma Foundation to ensure that animals receive timely medical care and dignity, not as an exception but as a standard. When healthcare systems are in place, survival does not have to depend on luck. Our focus has always been on building long-term solutions through infrastructure, preventive care, and consistent on-ground action.”
Karma Foundation is supported by a team of over 40 professionals, including full-time veterinarians, surgeons, trained caregivers, and visiting specialists, who work round the clock to respond to emergencies and deliver sustained care.
With a mission to make Pune a rabies-free city, the organisation is also focused on expanding its outreach into rural India through smaller units aimed at education, awareness, and basic animal healthcare. Through its continued efforts, Karma Foundation is working towards creating a more humane, organised, and sustainable animal welfare ecosystem in India.
