Thane: KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully treated a rare ovarian cancer in a 24-year-old woman while preserving her future fertility—highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, expert surgical planning, and patient-centric care.

The young, unmarried woman visited the hospital with sudden abdominal pain and rapid abdominal swelling that had developed over a week. Until a few days earlier, she had no major symptoms except a history of heavy and painful menstrual cycles for the past two to three years. Medical examination revealed a large abdominal mass, equivalent to a pregnancy of nearly seven months.

Further investigations, including ultrasound and MRI scans, showed a large tumour arising from the right ovary. Blood tests revealed elevated tumour markers, raising suspicion of a rare type of ovarian cancer known as ovarian dysgerminoma, a germ cell tumour that commonly affects young women.

Considering the patient’s age and her wish to retain fertility, the medical team planned a fertility-preserving surgery after detailed counselling. A carefully executed surgery was performed to remove only the affected ovary and fallopian tube, while preserving the uterus and the healthy ovary. The tumour was removed intact without rupture, significantly reducing the risk of cancer spread.

The patient recovered smoothly after surgery and was discharged within five days. Detailed histopathological evaluation, carried out in close coordination with Dr. Leena Patwardhan, Consultant Histopathologist, and Dr. Ushma Wartikar, Consultant Histopathologist, confirmed that the tumour was completely contained with tumour-free surgical margins. The surgery was performed with such precision that chemotherapy was not required, thereby sparing the patient from potential side effects. Postoperative tumour marker levels returned to normal, and the patient is currently doing well under close follow-up.
